A strong-willed princess refuses to play by the rules in this romantic tale. Exiled to the country for her unmannered behavior, Princess Olympia (Sophia Loren) secretly falls in love with an American millionaire (John Gavin). Olympia's upcoming arranged marriage to a Prussian prince (Carlo Hintermann) angers a jealous countess (Angela Lansbury), who threatens to spill the beans about the princess's American lover.
