A shy widower (JEREMY IRONS) moves to a small seaside community and joins the local amateur theatre group. A production of A Beggar’s Opera is being rehearsed by a scruffy solicitor (ANTHONY HOPKINS), the show’s director. Before long, Irons discovers that the drama on stage is nothing compared to what's happening behind the scenes -- seduction, romance, factional in-fighting to rival the Balkans, and the inevitable jealousy as he emerges as the local Lothario. Adapted for the screen by Alan Ackbourne from his prize-winning stageplay.
