A Farewell to Arms

While serving in the Italian ambulance corps during World War I, adventurous American Lt. Frederick Henry (Gary Cooper) falls in love with English nurse Catherine Barkley (Helen Hayes). But the tumult of war and green-eyed rival Maj. Rinaldi (Adolphe Menjou) conspire to separate the impassioned lovers. Director Frank Borzage's adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's illustrious novel chalked up a richly deserved Academy Award for Best Cinematography.
