Carmen and her daughter are appalled at the chilly treatment they receive when they visit their own neighborhood in make-up. After experiencing racism on a regular basis for the first time in her life, Carmen becomes disheartened with Bruno's obstinate views. She expresses serious concerns about their future together. A made-up Rose tours Crenshaw with a friend from poetry class, and is surprised at how often race comes up. Rose confides to her mother that trying to fit in with her new black friends is a constant struggle. She feels that they are not accepting her because she is not coming across as authentic. Bruno plays a video of his Midlife Rap. It insults rap music, and offends both Renee and Carmen. Renee finds out that Nick allowed a group of white kids to use the N-word in his presence without confronting or chastising them.
