Connie, a local pawn shop owner and designated Don of her rundown Brooklyn neighborhood, spends each day staring out her window, lamenting the state of the world. As her grandson Dougie sits silently glued to his movie player, various criminals pass in and out of the shop, each enduring Connie s hilariously racist barbs. Fitz and Dino are The Mateurs, petty thieves who dream of a big score but who find themselves trapped in a grainy, early 1970 s antihero movie. Ronald and Maya are The Moolies, loan sharks who are drowning in debtg and who can t seem to escape a life that looks like a rap video. And The Sputniks, Lana and Slava, are desperate refugees from Chechnya who want to brighten their morose, black-and-white existence by becoming American.
