Charles, Lillian and the Powell family rent a cabin in the mountains to spend a quiet Christmas in the snow. Walter agrees to follow later in the day with the food and presents while Buddy drives the family to the cabin. They arrive to find a dirty and bleak cabin, yet Charles initiates the Christmas spirit by cutting down a tree to serve as the Christmas tree. Buddy tries to leave but learns the roads have been closed due to the snowstorm. The situation worsens when the phone line goes dead, and there is no food except some canned mushrooms. In addition, the chimney is stopped up causing the cabin to fill with smoke. Eventually, all are complaining that Charles' idea is ruining their holiday.
