After killing a sheriff in self-defense during a skirmish in an all white saloon, Chato, an embittered Apache half-breed, is pursued across the parched Western desert by a disreputable, ragtag white posse led by ex-Confederate officer. Eventually, the pursued and the pursuers will become reversed after some members of the posse rape Chato's squaw -- an act that will convert Chato into a savage, vengeful warrior.
