Director Andrzej Munk explores the notion of heroism in two seriocomic sketches set in World War II Poland. Scherzo Alla Polacca tells the story of a young man trying to avoid military service whose instinct for self-preservation ultimately proves more valuable than empty sacrifice. In Ostinato Lugubre, a concentration camp inmate inspires his fellow prisoners with his daring escape, but the attempt at freedom isn't quite what it seems.
