Director Robert Altman adapts Sam Shepard's hit Broadway play. Rugged drifter Eddie (Shepard) turns up at the dilapidated El Royale Motel in New Mexico with an eye toward wooing his former flame, May (Kim Basinger), a blonde hottie who waitresses in the bar. Over the course of a single night, the lovers argue endlessly, gradually revealing the tragic secret behind their former affair. Randy Quaid co-stars as a rival for May's affections.
