The vital, idealistic energy of this musical epitomizes the spirit of the 1960s as the Age of Aquarius. John Savage plays a square Oklahoma Vietnam draftee who is adopted by a group of New York City flower children. They take him on a series of consciousness-raising adventures, with song, music and dance bursting all over the place, including Central Park where the kids witness a horse ballet (performed by New York mounted police watching over a be-in). Savage is urged on by the flower children in a romance with an eccentric debutante, who will pursue Savage to his training camp in Nevada in a bittersweet finale. Milos Forman directed from the long-running Broadway play (1,800 performances).
