In an adult motel, two men are arguing. The larger man, Leo Zukoff, knifes and kills the smaller man. A woman in the next room goes to Hunter and McCall, telling them of the argument she overheard. She says the larger man was Russian. They show her a lineup. She thinks she recognizes the man. Hunter goes to Santa Clara, California to learn about the victim. When he returns to L.A., he meets McCall at a restaurant. He later arrives home to find a dead girl sitting in one of his chairs. Without disturbing the scene, Hunter telephones McCall and asks her to return to the restaurant. When he tells her what happened, McCall accompanies Hunter to his home. By the time they get there, the body is gone.
