In 1933, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), her father and his gang are traveling the Deep South searching for a new place to set up residence. While resting on the side of the road in Alabama, Grace and her traveling companions are approached by a young woman who pleads for them to follow her through an old iron gate. Grace s father warns her to not get involved, but she follows the young woman anyway -- through the iron gate and past a boulder with the word "Manderlay" imprinted on it. Soon they have arrived at a working plantation where people are living as if slavery were never abolished, with white masters and black slaves. Despite her father s disapproval, Grace stays to liberate Manderlay and help the former slaves through their first harvest as free people.
