Fanny's family is dismayed at her rejection of Mr. Crawford. Sir Thomas abuses her for insubordination and ingratitude and contrives a plan to send Fanny back to her family's shabby home for a few months, so that she might realize that a rich husband is a very useful thing to have. Mr. Crawford comes to Fanny to demonstrate that he has changed his ways and is now worthy of her affections. However, shortly after he leaves for London, Fanny begins to hear rumors of a scandal involving him and Maria.
