Marilyn Monroe on Her Fame
Marilyn Monroe, born Norma Jean Mortenson on June 1st, 1926, remains one of the world's most enduring sex symbols. She went from pinup model to screen icon in a few short years, starring in such hits as "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" (1953), "How to Marry a Millionaire" (1953), and "The Seven-Year Itch" (1955). She was a natural comedian, and her look--blond hair, voluptuousness, and wide-eyed charm--was widely imitated. In 1955, she was at the height of her popularity, but she took time off to study with Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio in New York City in an attempt to better her acting ability. She subsequently gave strong performances in "Bus Stop" (1956) and the hit comedy "Some Like It Hot" (1959).Monroe suffered from depression most of her life, and her marriages to baseball player Joe DiMaggio and playwright Arthur Miller were unhappy.
