The 34-year old bachelor congressman from Massachusetts announces that he is considering a run for the Senate The following year, Kennedy won the seat, defeating Republican incumbent Henry Cabot Lodge, despite a nationwide Republican landslide. Kennedy was a guest on Meet the Press a total of eight times before his death.
