Paul Sheldon (James Caan) is a successful author completing a novel, the latest in a series featuring the character Misery Chastain. After being involved in a serious, life-threatening car accident, he is found and nursed back to health by a reclusive woman, Annie Wilkes (Katy Bates, who won a Best Actress Oscar), who is Misery's biggest fan. Annie goes postal when she discovers that in this next Misery novel, her favorite character dies .so she detains him in her house until he writes another Misery novel with a happy ending. In the meantime, a local sheriff and Paul s agent (Lauren Bacall) are frantically searching for him not knowing that they must find them before he dies either from his wounds or at the hands of the nearly-psychotic Annie.
