While riding through a small desert town, renegade cop and professional bounty hunter Reno Raines is arbitrarily arrested by Sheriff Chet Durham (CASEY SANDER) for the murder of Carol Atkins (MARILYN McINTYRE), a local housewife. While imprisoned and handcuffed, Reno asks so many shrewd questions about the crime scene that Sheriff Durham is finally convinced Reno was once a big-city detective. Using his alias, Vincent Black, Reno offers to help solve the case and is led to Carol's bloodstained motel room. From photographs strewn around the room and a bizarre number 36 drawn in Carol's blood on the motel wall, Reno concludes she was murdered by a serial killer who was experienced in photography and obsessed with the number 36.
