Traveling across America with her father (Willem Dafoe), Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard) comes to discover the isolated plantation of Manderlay - a place whose inhabitants do not know that slavery has been abolished. Outraged to discover that the plantation's owner, Mam (Lauren Bacall), not only employs slaves but also refuses to open their eyes to the truth, Grace fights against all odds to free the slaves of Manderlay, who include Wilhelm (Danny Glover), the old house servant and the two-faced, rebellious Timothy (Isaach De Bankole). This Cannes Golden Palm nominated drama is from the innovative Danish director and screenwriter, Lars von Trier and also features Chloe Sevigny and John Hurt.

In 1933, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), her father and his gang are traveling the Deep South searching for a new place to set up residence. While resting on the side of the road in Alabama, Grace and her traveling companions are approached by a young woman who pleads for them to follow her through an old iron gate. Grace s father warns her to not get involved, but she follows the young woman anyway -- through the iron gate and past a boulder with the word "Manderlay" imprinted on it. Soon they have arrived at a working plantation where people are living as if slavery were never abolished, with white masters and black slaves. Despite her father s disapproval, Grace stays to liberate Manderlay and help the former slaves through their first harvest as free people. -
