Prospero, a potent necromancer, lives on a desolate isle with his virginal daughter, Miranda. He's in exile, banished from his duchy by his usurping brother and the King of Naples. The king's son, thinking all others lost, becomes Prospero's prisoner, falling in love with Miranda and she with him. Roderigo, a former suitor of Desdemona, and Iago, who believes he has been passed over for promotion by Othello, tell Senator Brabantio of his daughter s elopement with Othello, the Moor. Brabantio, Othello, and Desdemona appear before the Duke of Venice, where Desdemona convinces the senators that she has married for love. The Duke appoints Othello as general of the defense forces against the Turks, and he must leave for Cyprus. Othello arranges for Desdemona to follow him in another ship with Iago, whom he believes is a trusted friend, and Iago s wife, Emilia. Iago convinces Roderigo that he should follow Desdemona to Cyprus. In Cyprus, Iago plants the seed of doubt in Othello s mind about Desdemona s fidelity and implicates Cassio, the man who received the promotion he himself wanted, as her lover. Iago arranges a fight, resulting in Cassio s demotion.

Rosalind, the daughter of a duke, falls in love with Orlando, the disinherited son of one of the duke's friends. But when Duke Frederick usurps his older brother he banishes both his brother and his niece, Rosalind, to the Forest of Arden. Frederick's daughter, Celia, flees with Rosalind and they head to the Forest of Arden with Touchstone, the clown. Orlando, the younger son of Sir Rowland, rebels against being kept a virtual prisoner by his older brother, Oliver. After their servant, Adam, warns Orlando of Oliver's plans to kill him. Orlando and Adam also flee to the Forest of Arden. Duke Frederick, upon finding Celia, Rosalind, and Orlando missing, orders Oliver to find them, or face banishment himself. Orlando and Oliver eventually reconcile, and Oliver tells his brotherthat he has fallen in love with Celia, who has disguised herself as Aliena.
