Kibre (Bebe Neuwirth) works with Detectives Stabler and Benson (guest stars Christopher Meloni and Mariska Hargitay from NBC's "SVU") to prosecute a serial rapist Gabriel (guest star Alfred Molina) whose trail of victims through the years has been whitewashed by his wealthy and protective mother Eleanor (guest star Angela Lansbury). Kibre must also overcome witness intimidation -- and even sees her crucial DNA evidence tossed out -- but the slippery suspect's lawyer has yet another surprise under his sleeve. Executive producer Dick Wolf's newest spinoff of the famed "Law & Order"-themed series premieres as tough New York Assistant D.A. Tracey Kibre (Emmy and Tony winner Bebe Neuwirth) tackles the murder of an aspiring Broadway actress but has little evidence to prosecute the suspect -- an acclaimed but arrogant theater producer (guest starring actor-director-producer Tony Bill) who smugly knows that the police have found no blood or even a body. Kibre is joined by her unflappable deputy A.D.A., Kelly Gaffney (Amy Carlson, NBC's "Third Watch"), as they work with Detectives Briscoe (Jerry Orbach) and Salazar (Kirk Acevedo, "Band of Brothers") to pursue physical evidence while the producer's attorney (Annabella Sciorra, "Jungle Fever") maneuvers to publicly portray the missing woman as promiscuous. Fred Dalton Thompson also stars and his fellow "Law & Order" star Sam Waterston guest-stars in their regular roles.

Captain Cragen ends up in the cross-hairs of an internal investigation into evidence tampering, and the DA's office is forced to put him in a precarious situation to implicate the conspirators.

Are psychiatric drugs necessary? - In SVU's season seven finale, former rock star Derek Lord (guest star Norman Reedus) goes on a national talk show and lectures about the abuse of psychiatric drugs. Meanwhile, an unstable young woman Jamie Hoskins (guest star Brittany Snow), who loses her virginity, goes off her prescribed medication, gets behind the wheel of a car, and mows down 10 people. As these events are played out in a highly charged way, the argument about prescribed "meds" is challenged. Mariska Hargitay, Chris Meloni, Tamara Tuni, B.D. Wong, Richard Belzer, Ice-T and Dianne Neal also star.

The first film version of W.R. Burnett's novel Saint Johnson was filmed as Law and Order in 1932. Essentially an all-names-changed retelling of the Wyatt Earp legend, the film scored on its humanity and restraint. The 1953 remake eschewed the shadings and subtleties of the original in favor of a traditional shoot-em-up, replete with gratuitous violence. Ronald Reagan stars as the Earp counterpart this time, who has sworn to bring criminal Preston S. Foster to justice. The original Law and Order had no love interest at all; the Reagan version pairs up the star with beautiful Dorothy Malone, and offers a second leading lady in the form of Ruth Hampton. The original had a hanging sequence which was treated as business as usual; the remake turns this sequence into a brutal lynching. Common to both films was the final showdown between Reagan and Foster, given added melodrama in the later version by the fact that Reagan had previously sworn to give up his guns for the love of his lady. Another major casting change occurred during the third season of Law & Order, although not until the series had offered eight episodes. In Prince of Darkness, an undercover police operation goes tragically awry, and Detective Phil Ceretta (Paul Sorvino) ends up seriously wounded. Though Ceretta would recover sufficiently to take up a desk job, Sorvino himself decided to leave the series for good; like George Dzundza before him, the actor felt that the series' format was too confining for his talents. Brought in as Mike Logan's (Chris Noth) new partner was Jerry Orbach as laconic veteran detective Lennie Briscoe, a recovering alcoholic with a multitude of family problems (which, in fine old Law & Order tradition, were only revealed to the audience on a need to know basis). At the time Orbach joined the series, there was much speculation (usually tongue-in-cheek in nature) as to how long it would be before he, too, was shot down in the line of duty, just like Logan's two previous partners, Greevey and Ceretta.
