A swarthy, good looking American named Caine (Burt Renolds) arrives in a small, dusty, hole-in-the-ground town in the Sudan after having escaped government soldiers who nearly seized him with a truckload of illegal arms. Later, Caine, looking for an escape from the police, meets up with Anna (Silva Pinal) and Dr. Mallare (Barry Sullivan, an ichthyologist looking for rare fish specimens. Anna convinces Cais to sign on as a deck hand. That night, however, Caine finds out that he is more than just a deck hand; he is a partner. The drama grows as the dive for $2 million worth of gold in shark-infested waters, and Caine relizes he is off to an appointment with dangerous sharks, and with death
