Billie Jean's contribution to Wimbledon during the late 60s and early 70s and the influence she had on the tennis world was, and is, immense.

The 1978 Ladies' Singles Final between Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert produced an absorbing match between these two great rivals. There could not have been two more contrasting characters at Wimbledon, as the fiery Navratilova clashed with her friend, "ice maiden" Chris Evert. The stage was set for an enthralling contest, with Evert winning four games in a row. But Navratilova recovered to win the first of her many Wimbledon titles.

1993 was the anniversary of the one hundredth Ladies' Singles Championship at Wimbledon. Defending champion Steffi Graf had her sights on a fifth Wimbledon title after her French Open victory. Underdog Jana Novotna's impressive run saw her defeat the No. 2 seed Martina Navratilova on Centre Court in the semifinal. The centenary Ladies' Final was packed with drama and charged with emotion as Jana, who played some of the best tennis of her life, against Graf.

Croatia's Goran Ivanisevic came into The Championship as a wild card who was not expected to go further than one or two rounds. But by Men's Final day, Ivanisevic had defeated Andre Agassi and Britain's Tim Henman. Pat Rafter, the No. 3 seed, reached his second Wimbledon final after a dramatic semifinal against Agassi. The crowd that had queued overnight for their encounter were not disappointed, as Rafter battled Ivanisevic in an epic and emotional Wimbledon Championship Final.

Jimmy Connors, a self-taught player from Illinois, had won Wimbledon, the US Open and Australian Open. During the 1975 Wimbledon Championship, he looked invincible as he made his way to the final without losing a set. The 32 year-old Arthur Ashe seemed past his prime and unlikely to defeat Connors, who had beaten him in their last three encounters. But Ashe proved to be anything but an easy opponent and became a part of Wimbledon history.

Directed by Richard Loncraine, Wimbledon follows the plight of aspiring tennis-star Peter Colt (Paul Bettany), whose bad luck seems to manifest itself just about everywhere. Professionally, Peter is near the very bottom of the world tennis ranks, and personally, he can't find love despite his best efforts to do so. In a rare turn of events, however, Peter is chosen as a wildcard to play at Wimbledon, the tennis world's most prestigious competition. While there, he meets American tennis ing nue Lizzie Bradbury (Kirsten Dunst), and his confidence on the court and off improves tenfold as he falls further in love with her. Driven by his newfound luck, Peter climbs to the top of the tournament players at record speed, until he actually has a fighting chance of winning the men's singles title -- the question is whether or not his good fortune will hold out long enough for him to get the trophy. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide.
