After an argument with his mistress Avery Benton, tabloid newspaper publisher Lyle Hayes is shot to death. Told by Hayes' estranged wife of the many people with motives to kill the unpopular publisher, Chris and Rita track down every lead and finally focus on Avery as their prime suspect. After Chris meets Avery's son Randall and makes friends with the boy, Avery claims that she didn't see Hayes on the night he was killed. In the wake of a minor traffic accident, Rita agrees to a date with rock concert promoter Tyler Harris.
