After a fellow cop Tina Maxwell is beaten to death by her jealous boyfriend, Rita dismisses his alibi that it was an accidental result of their rough sex play. Then, after running into a retired detective whose career was haunted by an unsolved murder, Rita is surprised when Scotty Adanno gives her the evidence in the forty-year-old killing of singer Jasmine Hayworth. Distressed by the D.A.'s decision to only file manslaughter charges in Tina's murder, an overworked Rita begins to see visions of Jasmine's ghost beckoning her from her coffin to help solve her killing. So, turning to the dead woman's granddaughter and learning of a one million-dollar reward originally offered by her grandfather, Rita is told of Jasmine's affair with her accompanist, Victor Lozano.
