At the exclusive Carlisle Tennis Resort, Chris and Rita witness an argument between owner Don Carlisle and his wife Valerie over the conduct of Carter Ward, a teenage employee with whom Mrs. Carlisle is having a clandestine affair. Tearfully claiming that her husband threatened to kill her, Valerie then asks Carter for a ride home. And there, coming out of an alcohol-induced fog, Carter discovers Carlisle dead and Valerie claiming he did it to save her life. While Valerie tells the police that her husband came downstairs to investigate a noise, a stray button catches Rita's eye. Questioned again later, she suggests that Carter could be a suspect, especially since the boy had a crush on her. However, Mrs. Carlisle insists they never had sex as the teenager's letters seem to claim.
