With her literary career sagging, ex-cop turned author Alex Dale turns to blackmail, first threatening to sink George Donovan's campaign for county attorney by revealing their affair before turning to Assembly Chairman Holden Burnett with a similar waning. Then, aware that business manager Jason Lyons is being pressured by a mobster he owes, Alex also threatens to expose his financial irregularities unless they resume their affair. However, upon going to her home and discovering Alex's dead body, Donovan is surprised by the police, claiming he was only there to solicit support for his campaign.
