Hanamichi feels himself increasingly attracted to basketball, and he begins to take the sport more seriously. Even Akagi, who covertly watched Hanamichi's exchange with Aota, is happy at Hanamichi's words and practice becomes more intense. Perhaps fueled by these incidents, Akagi asks Anzai for Hanamichi to learn the basic lay-up. Hanamichi has no interest in such pedestrian techniques, but when he gives it a try, it's not as easy as he thinks. Unsatisfied, Hanamichi begins to secretly train early in the morning with Haruko to master the fundamentals.
