This film is based on the classic story The Elves and the Shoemaker by the Brothers Grimm. A poor shoemaker named Hans is down to his last piece of shoe leather. Fortunately for Hans, four little elves-in-training just happened to be looking for a good deed to earn them their full elf-status. That night, as Hans slept, the little sprites cobbled together a magnificent pair of shoes. The next morning, Hans sold these to the kingdom's vain, shoe-loving king. Before long, the shoe-crazy king commanded Hans to become his royal shoemaker. But Hans would rather make shoes for the poor children of the village. In the course of this adventure, the Elves learn how to work together in selfless deeds of caring for Hans and others. Tommy, Han's young assistant, learns how to earn an honest living rather than stealing. Hans stands up for what he believes, helping the poor rather than the selfish king.
