Thirty years after Edward R. Murrow's HARVEST OF SHAME, THIRD WORLD CALIFORNIA looks at the continuing plight of farm workers, the unwilling victims of the cost and profit squeeze between the consumer and the producer. In the last 15 years, the Hispanic community has become the fastest growing minority in the US. The lack of resources to absorb the growing influx of these immigrants seeking low paying jobs, has generated a surge of substandard living conditions. In South California, only a few miles from the US/Mexico border is Coachella Valley. On the western perimeter of the Valley there exists wealthy cities, such as Palm Springs and Indian Wells, as well as other resorts and country clubs. In contrast to this prosperous environment, most residents living on the eastern side of the Valley are newly arrived Latino immigrants.
