Chicago s Savemoney crew has had the blogosphere buzzing of late, with Chance the Rapper s Acid Rap mixtape climbing the Billboard charts via very unorthodox channels. Well, another member of that crew is primed to pop off in the coming month: Tokyo Shawn, whose trippy video for I Know You premieres today on MTV Hive. The track I Know You, off of Shawn s upcoming LP The Wave Theory, lies somewhere in the gap between jazz-rap, alternative hip-hop and neo soul. With the smooth jam, the rapper wanted to create the perfect cohesive sound, Shawn tells MTV Hive. We think he succeeded. I try to use some of the vocals as another instrument on the track and have lyrics that resonate with a lot of people, he says. In the song I know you feel that too is when you look at somebody and they feel the same way but there are no words spoken. To help bring the lyrics to life, Shawn called on director Peter Campbell and choreographer Mary Pat Letourneau, who helped him create a wholly new kind of dance video. A member of the Savemoney crew suggested Campbell, who was busy documenting the Chicago hip-hop scene at the time.Shot in soft focus, Shawn performs in an old dance studio, surrounded by a crew of dancers with blurred faces rehearsing a modern and hip-hop routine. The video evokes a kind of disconcerting, laden feeling, one that runs throughout the rapper s upcoming LP. The Wave Theory is more so the idea that there is this other world that exists that we don t see which is the wave world, Shawn says. The Wave Theory will come out this fall.
