Joseph Hachem beings his defense of poker's World Championship in the last opening round session of the 2006 World Series of Poker Main Event. The Australian, a former Chiropractor, bested a then record-setting field of 5,600 players to win $7.5 million. Not since Johnny Chan won back-to-back titles in 1987 and 1988 has a player repeated as World Champion, and to do so, Hachem will have to beat more than 3,000 more players than he did last year. The final session of the Opening Round also features former champions Chris Moneymaker and Robert Varkonyi, plus a champion of a different sort: World Heavyweight Champion, Lennox Lewis.
