Jamie Meltzer s brilliant documentary political thriller has a twist: we know who done it. His name is Brandon Darby. He started out as a leftwing activist and New Orleans do-gooder and ended up accepting standing ovations at Tea Party conventions. Along the way, his ideals shifted or at least his notion of who the good guys and the bad guys are and he became an FBI informant. Hero or villain? Patriot or turncoat? Snitch or savior? Director Jamie Meltzer isn t saying. He leaves that up to you, which is the thrill in the thriller.
The heart of the story happens when Darby, by then a paid FBI informant, travels with militant activists to the 2008 Republican National Convention, with the intent of stopping them before they break the law. When two young men end up storing Molotov cocktails in their basement, that s when things really get interesting
