Following one of the most engaging media personalities of our time, THE CAPTAINS chronicles Shatner's quest to answer one burning question: why, in spite of his myriad stage, screen, and television credits, as well as his numerous Emmys and Golden Globe Awards, does one role in his career loom so large that it nearly eclipses all others? To find the answer, Shatner enlists the help of the elite group of actors who have also assumed the mantle of Starship Captain. In the process, coupling their own unique stories with compelling insights, the five Captains give Shatner a better understanding of his own life and solve this “mystery” once and for all. Featuring vintage Star Trek footage and in-depth interviews with actors Patrick Stewart (Captain Jean-Luc Picard), Kate Mulgrew (Captain Kathryn Janeway), Avery Brooks (Captain Benjamin Sisko), Scott Bakula (Captain Jonathan Archer), and Chris Pine (Captain James T. Kirk, Star Trek), THE CAPTAINS was shot on location in Toronto, London, New York, Princeton and Los Angeles, where Shatner could capture his fellow Captains in their home environments. The acclaimed HD film, which originally premiered as part of Epix's "Shatnerpalooza" this summer, exposes the Captains in all their earthly humanity, offering a rare and candid glimpse into the inner sanctum of each actor and their time at the helm of the Starship Enterprise.
Since first soaring onto television screens in the mid 1960s, Star Trek has become one of the most beloved franchises of all time. The original Captain Kirk, William Shatner, travels around the globe to interview the elite group of actors (Patrick Stewart, Chris Pine, Scott Bakula, Avery Brooks and more) who have portrayed the role of Enterprise Captain, giving fans an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the pop culture phenomenon.
Set in the world of New York City's elite private kindergartens, THE BEST AND THE BRIGHTEST centers on a fresh-faced young couple from Delaware, Jeff (Neil Patrick Harris) and Samantha (Bonnie Somerville), who have only recently moved into town. The comedy centers on the extreme lengths they must go to in order to get their five-year-old daughter into school.
When the obstacles in this high-stakes world become apparent, Jeff tells Sam that he'd rather just throw in the towel and move back home. But Sam harbors a strong ambitious streak. Deep down she yearns for something more than her small-town provincial life. She wants to take one last shot at her dream of a life among the best and brightest. Like Dustin Hoffman's character in TOOTSIE, Sam's stubborn determination is the engine of the movie.
Every private school in the city informs Sam that she's simply too late to apply for a kindergarten spot this fall. But Sam will not be denied. She begs Jeff to hire a "consultant" to find a crack in the system.
The oddball consultant Sue Lemon (Amy Sedaris) does precisely that, and Sam and Jeff are granted a rare interview at the posh Coventry Day School.
But the interview comes at a cost. The only way Sue is able to arrange it is by telling the headmistress (Jenna Stern) a critical lie: that Jeff is a renowned poet, instead of the humdrum computer programmer he is in real life. Jeff wants no part of this fabrication, but yet again Sam talks him into going along with it.
Keeping this ridiculous lie aloft is the main action of the movie, as Sam and Jeff are forced to prove their poetic bona fides not only to the school's headmistress but to the entire school board (played by Christopher McDonald, Kate Mulgrew, and John Hodgman). Soon Sam and Jeff are thrust upon the most elite stages of Upper East Side society, not on the strength of their character but on the back of an absurd charade.
By the end of the movie, Sam is forced to choose between living the life she has dreamed of - but lying in order to do so - or going back to Delaware as herself. This decision leads to an explosive and hilarious climax in front of an audience of New York City's best and brightest.

In honor of their 12 Emmy nominations, the most for a comedy this year, the cast and crew of Orange is the New Black celebrated on set yesterday with oranges and mimosas! Practically every one of the Litchfield ladies took to Instagram to document the momentous occasion. In addition to the show itself being nominated for Outstanding Comedy, Taylor Schilling, Kate Mulgrew, Uzo Aduba, Laverne Cox, and Natasha Lyonne were all nominated for acting awards.
Believe it or not, this is Orange Is the New Black star Kate Mulgrew's first-ever Emmy nomination. Mulgrew, who has been on TV since the '70s with roles in Ryan's Hope, Mrs. Colombo and, of course, Star Trek: Voyager, got her first nomination for playing Galina 'Red' Reznikov on the hit Netflix series that took the Emmys by storm in 2014.'I don't know, there's a poignancy to that,' Mulgrew said about her first nomination coming for OITNB.
Star Trek Online, Bird & Cactus try out the new MMORPG from Cryptic Studios. A spoof starring Spock and Janeway.
Spock is a character in the fictional Star Trek media franchise. First portrayed by Leonard Nimoy in the original Star Trek series, Spock also appears in the animated Star Trek series, two episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, seven of the Star Trek feature films, and numerous Star Trek books, comics, and video games. In the 2009 film Star Trek, Nimoy reprised his role alongside Zachary Quinto, who played a younger, alternate-timeline version of the character, with Jacob Kogan playing Spock as a child.
Kathryn Janeway, played by Kate Mulgrew, is a fictional character in the Star Trek franchise. As the captain of the Starfleet starship USS Voyager, she was the lead character on the television series Star Trek: Voyager, and later, a Starfleet admiral, as seen in the 2002 feature film Star Trek Nemesis. She is the first, and to date, the only female captain to be the lead character in a Star Trek series.
Ceti Alpha V - A barely habitable planet where, in 2267, Captain Kirk stranded the renegade ruler Khan Noonien Singh and his followers. Six months later, Ceti Alpha VI exploded and caused destruction of Ceti Alpha V's ecosystem, shifting its orbit and rendering it a barren wasteland, although it still supported a deadly parasitic creature that Khan named theCeti eel. The story of Khan's survival is chronicled in the 2006 non-canonical novel, To Reign in Hell: The Exile of Khan Noonien Singh. In 2285, the USS Reliant went to Ceti Alpha V, mistaking it for Ceti Alpha VI, which had been chosen for testing the Genesis Device. Khan stole the ship and set out to avenge himself on Kirk. In addition, years before any of this occurred, in an alternate future in the Star Trek: Enterprise episode "Twilight", after the Xindi destroyed Earth in 2154, the planet became the new homeworld of what was left of Humanity (chosen by episode writer Mike Sussman as a "cruel joke" since the planet would become all but uninhabitable in a hundred years anyway). Note: it is uncertain whether Ceti Alpha is the same as Alpha Ceti, a real star system 220 light years from Earth. Under the Bayer designation system, the Greek letter should precede the constellation name, and in the novelization of "The Wrath of Khan", Alpha Ceti V is indeed the form used.
Ceti Alpha VI - Sister planet to Ceti Alpha V. The planet exploded sometime around 2267 and destroyed Ceti Alpha V's ecosystem. The cataclysmic event apparently went unnoticed by the Federation who chose the planet as a test site for the Genesis Device in 2285. The USS Reliant goes to Ceti Alpha V by mistake, not realizing they have mistaken it as the sixth planet, and unaware of classified information regarding Khan.
