Blind Vision |   Blind Vision
Shuki Levy, best known for his work on behalf of the Saban Entertainment animated-cartoon firm, directs a group of live performers in Blind Vision. Lenny Von Dohlen stars as nerdish mail clerk, who worships Deborah Shelton from afar. Emulating Hitchcock's Rear Window (or is it DePalma's Body Double?), Von Dohlen watches his dream girl through a highpowered lens. When one of Shelton's boyfriends turns up dead, Von Dohlen is sucked into a vortex of intrigue. Don't be lulled into the sense of deja vu in the early reels; this one's got quite a few tricks up its sleeve. Written by Levy and his frequent Saban collaborator Winston Rickard, Blind Vision costars Robert Vaughn (as Mr. X!), Ned Beatty, and Louise Fletcher; the film was lensed on location in Norfolk, Virginia. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide.

Manna From Heaven |   Manna From Heaven
Sisters Gabrielle C. and Maria Burton direct the independent comedy Manna From Heaven, written by their mother, Gabrielle B. Burton, and produced by their siblings at Five Sisters Productions. In Buffalo, NY, during the '50s, the wind blows in cash money to the tune of 20 thousand dollars. Believing it was a tangible gift from God, Sister Teresa (Ursula Burton) tries to gather up the money and pay it back 30 years later. However, her family members don't want to give up their free money and can't even get along, including card dealer Inez (Wendie Malick) and con artists Bunny (Shirley Jones) and Ed Burns (Frank Gorshin, in his final film role). Also starring Seymour Cassel, Shelley Duvall, Cloris Leachman, Harry Groener, Faye Grant, Jill Eikenberry and Louise Fletcher. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide.

Strange Behavior |   Strange Behavior
Dead Kids, aka Strange Behavior, is a creepy exercise from director Michael Laughlin--who conceived this as part one of an abortive Strange Trilogy which also included 1983's Strange Invaders. Although lensed in New Zealand, the film is set in a sleepy American town, in which a series of gory murders committed by local teenagers are linked to a twisted brainwashing scheme by a deranged behavioral psychologist (note irony please). Despite some humorous details (e.g. one killer dons a Tor Johnson mask) and a nostalgia for '50s pulp horrors (not to mention a fondness for splattery death scenes), the disparate plot elements don't come together as well as they should, failing to live up to the premise's potential for guilty chuckles or gasps of horror. Fiona Lewis is sexually menacing as the mad doc's assistant, but Louise Fletcher's wasted role may make viewers pine for Nurse Ratched. ~ Cavett Binion, All Movie Guide.

Tommy |   Tommy
Tommy (Roger Daltrey) is a deaf, dumb and blind kid who retreats into himself after the death of his father. His mother, Nora (Ann-Margret), and stepfather Frank (Oliver Reed) take him to see a specialist (Jack Nicholson) but Tommy is apparently a hopeless case. That is, until Tommy discovers that he sure plays a mean pinball. Tommy gains fame when he defeats the Pinball Wizard (Elton John) for the world championship. As a result, Tommy becomes such a celebrity that he even founds his own religious cult. But his fans begin to commercialize his fame, while Tommy wants to stick to the straight and narrow. When Tommy wants to end the commercialization of his message, his supporters accuse him of being hypocritical and turn on him. Ann-Margret, with a slinky red dress slit way up the side, was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar, losing out to Louise Fletcher in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide.
