The Ricardos and Mertzes are out at a restaurant and Lucy keeps changing her order and their seating. Ricky points out that she constantly changes her mind and never completes things. The next day, Lucy finds an old, unfinished love letter to an old high school romance, Tom Henderson, now a successful furrier. Still annoyed by what Ricky said the night before, Lucy intends to finish it and leave it out for him to find. Before this happens, Fred alerts Ricky about her plan. When he doesn't react the way she hopes, Lucy decides to go to Henderson's fur salon to make him jealous. When she arrives, she sees a man who is not the prime physical specimen she remembers. With Ricky and Fred following close behind, Lucy decides to let them see her flirting with a mannequin instead of the man she believes is Tom.

A magazine test has gotten Lucy into a tizzy. Lucy and Ricky take a test called "How to Rate Your Marriage." One of the questions in the quiz asks about old flames. When Lucy rattles off a list of old boyfriends, Ricky feels the need to have at least one past flame to compare. Using the name of a woman he worked with many years ago, Ricky manages to make Lucy very jealous of the imaginary Carlota Romero. As luck would have it, the real Carlota is in town singing at the Opal Room. Ricky's press agent, Jerry, sets up a meeting for the two, and Lucy goes along to see this ex-girlfriend. Sufficed to say, peace reigns supreme in the Ricardo household when Lucy discovers that Carlota is now a full-figured, middle-aged woman who's not the temptress Lucy feared.

Lucy and Ricky are exhausted from walking the baby at night and hire a maid. Lucy prepares a list of dos and don'ts in order to set down the law for her new employee. However when Mrs. Porter arrives, she has her own list for her employer and completely overwhelms Lucy. Ethel talks Lucy into firing Mrs. Porter, but this is easier said than done because of the maid's domineering attitude. Lucy decides to make the apartment such a mess that the maid will quit. Unfortunately she goes to all this trouble only to discover that Ricky has already dismissed Mrs. Porter.

Lucy decides to try a new look, despite her husband Ricky's objections. She borrows a black wig from her hairdresser Roberta, who tells Lucy it makes her look like a whole different person. With that in mind, Lucy decides to play a little trick on Ricky to test his fidelity. She doesn't know that Doug, the salon manager, already tipped Ricky off to the scheme. Lucy, disguised in her new wig, flirts with Ricky and he flirts back! She's mortified that her husdand would flirt with another woman and returns home to seek Ethel's advice. Together Lucy and Ethel devise a plan: Lucy will make a date with Ricky and will bring Ethel along in disguise. Ethel, unable to rent one complete costume from her friend 'Mother' Carroll's costume shop, is forced to wear pieces from three different costumes.

Lucy's neighbor Miss Lewis has a crush on Mr. Ritter, the local grocer, but is too shy to invite him to dinner. Trying to play Cupid, Lucy delivers an invitation for her but he gets the idea that Lucy has fallen for him.
