Sgt. Friday (Jack Webb) and Officer Gannon (Harry Morgan) trail a pair of paroled convicts who have shot a fellow officer in "The Shooting". While Officer Dave Roberts (Don Marshall) recovers physically from the shotgun blast, which felled him during a routine check on the suspects parked near a liquor store, he suffers complete blackout as a result of the incident and is unable to make identification. Others in the cast include Alfred Shelly as Sgt. Al Vietti, Art Ballinger as Captain Brown and Hal Baylor and Dick Miller as the shooting suspects. Webb produces and directs as well as stars in the series.

An apartment house manger is bludgeoned to death and Sgt. Friday (Jack Webb) and his partner, Officer Gannon (Harry Morgan) seek the murderer in "The Hammer". Sgt. Friday (Jack Webb) and Officer Gannon (Harry Morgan) investigate a burglary in a luxurious Los Angeles home where $200,000 worth of jewelry is reported missing in, "The Jade Story". Socialite Francine Graham (Virginia Gregg), widow of an importer killed in the Orient, tells the officers that her imperial Jade was among pieces taken from the wall safe, which the thief managed to open. The cast includes Eddie Firestone as Ben Martin, small time burglar, Annazette as the maid, and Yoneo Iguchi as the gardener.

Jack Moony (Bob Hoskins) is a vice detective, but he is also an intense and crazed, racist lout. Jack has had a brief fling with a hooker named Crystal (Chloe Webb), but Crystal left him for Napoleon Stone (Denzel Washington), a suave, handsome, cosmopolitan lawyer, who becomes the object of Jack's rage, not simply because he has stolen his girl but also because he is black. Jack, who lives on cheeseburgers, beer, and whiskey, has a heart attack. This occurs the same night that Stone is killed in an un-accidental car crash. Thanks to a quick organ transplant, Jake ends up with Stone's heart. At the height of the popularity of his Dragnet TV series, producer/director/star Jack Webb struck a deal with Warner Bros. to direct several feature films--the first of which, but of course, was 1954's Dragnet. This time around, the true story in which only the names are changed to protect the innocent involves the murder of former syndicate member Dub Taylor. LAPD sergeants Joe Friday (Webb) and Frank Smith (Ben Alexander) follow the trail of evidence to shifty gangster boss Stacy Harris, who during most of the film is able to avoid arrest through legal loopholes. Richard Boone plays Captain Hamilton, while Ann Robinson, best known for her screaming and scurrying about in War of the Worlds, plays policewoman Grace Downey. Dan Aykroyd must have practiced for months to perfect his Jack Webb inflections for Dragnet. Screenwriter Tom Mankiewicz's directorial debut (also written by Mankiewicz, along with Aykroyd, and Alan Zweibel) is a gentle spoof of the legendary '50s television police drama -- pitting '50s conservatism smack up against the attitudes of the '80s.
