Renegade cop and bounty hunter Reno Raines is hired by a Japanese banking executive, Yukio Ota (JAMES SHIGETA), to rescue his kidnapped teenage daughter, Mitsuko (KEIKO), from a mysterious warlord known only as "The Dragon" (AL LEONG). While Reno is assisted by his employer, Bobby Six Killer, Ota insists that his own security chief, Takara (CARYHIROYUKI TAGAWA), work with them as well. There is an immediate power struggle between Reno and Takara because the disciplined martial arts master blames Reno for interfering in a previous rescue attempt of Mitsuko from The Dragon's whip-wielding sadistic killer, Frank Sand (ANTHONY DeLONGIS )

Reno helps his karate master, Hideo Maruyama (JAMES SHIGETA - "Die Hard"), when one of the master's former pupils attacks a San Francisco councilwoman. The student, Glenn Kawahara, also known as "The Black Wind" (ROGER YUAN), is a formidable opponent and is allied with Akira Takei (DANA LEE), a powerful businessman and local Japanese Godfather. Reno attempts to bring Kawahara out in the open by harassing Takei but finds his efforts hampered by the local police as well as Hideo's daughter, Kathy (KELLY HU), who is involved romantically with the elusive "Wind." After a brutal yet unfinished contest with Kawahara, Reno returns to Hideo's studio to find the karate master missing, leaving Reno to confront the former student, as well as his own fears, to save his revered master.

The only Rodgers and Hammerstein cinemadaptation to be produced by Universal Pictures, Flower Drum Song was, alas, also the only Rogers and Hammerstein film to lose money at the box office. It looks far better now than it did back in 1961, if only because of the paucity of musical films in the 1990s. Essentially a comedy about the culture clash between old-world Chinese and assimilated Chinese-Americans, the film begins when Mei Li (Miyoshi Umeki) and her grandfather (Kam Tong) smuggle themselves into San Francisco. It seems that Mei Li has arrived to honor an arranged marriage between herself and Runyonesque nightclub owner Sammy Fong (the incomparable Jack Soo). This might prove delicate, since Sammy is in love with flashy cabaret entertainer Linda Low (Nancy Kwan). Meanwhile, Linda is romancing Wang Ta (James Shigeta), the son of a wealthy Chinatown merchant (Benson Fong). Soon, however, Mei Li and Wang Ta have fallen in love.......It's a complex plot, to be sure, but comedy and music manage to predominate
