Written and directed by Scott Hillenbrand and David Hillenbrand, the team behind the 1999 Anaconda sequel King Cobra, Pi ata: Survival Island is a horror-thriller starring Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Nicholas Brendon. Brendon plays Kyle, one of several college students participating in a reality television show that sends them to an exotic island. Once there, one of the contestants finds an ancient clay pi ata and accidentally cracks it, unleashing evil spirits that possess the pi ata and begins killing off the unsuspecting teens. The half-hour FOX sitcom Kitchen Confidential was inspired by the warts-and-all memoirs of celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain. Season 1, Episode 9: A ventriloquist act becomes surprisingly good when a dummy develops a mind of his own.

The idea of fusing teen sex-comedy and horror genres into a boffo box-office bonanza seems like classic braindead Hollywood-think... but somehow, beyond all reason, the makers of this film manage to pull it off. Much of the credit goes to director Fran Rubel Kuzui (Tokyo Pop) who chooses wisely to let the jokes and action rip by so quickly that viewers won't have time to realize there's practically nothing going on.
