Realizing he has only one life (in contrast to Cat's nine), Dog becomes ultra-safety conscious. At first, Cat is pleased since he is no longer a victim of Dog's recklessness, but Dog takes things too far. Cat convinces him that having one life means being careful but still taking advantage of fun activities.Tired of Cat's parental ways, Dog runs away from home. Stretching his body miles and miles away from Cat, Dog finds life on the open road an exciting adventure. Cat first enjoys his time alone but soon misses Dog and dispatches Winslow to go find him.

Winslow lets Cat in on a little secret: Shriek has a crush on Dog. Cat, seeing this as an opportunity to get the Greasers off his back, writes a love letter to Shriek in Dog's handwriting, inviting her to a secret rendezvous at the footbridge. Cat is in for more than he bargained for when Shriek and Dog marry, the Greaser Dogs move in, and Cat must care for a litter of puppies. Cat is at his wits end until he suddenly wakes up and realizes it was all a dream!CatDog get a job as box top lickers at a cereal company. Dog quickly becomes promoted to prize stuffer, an event which Cat sees as a license to slack off. Cat becomes jealous and tries to undermine Dog by putting nasty prizes in the cereal boxes. His plans backfire, however, and Dog fires Cat and the whole assembly staff. Forced to do everything himself, Dog goes crazy and inserts himself (and Cat) into a cereal box. Dog is summarily fired, too, and apologizes to Cat for his authoritarian ways.

Dog is dismayed to learn that his favorite milkbones are banned from Nearburg. Cat gets the idea for a money making scheme -- he and Dog sneak the "Farburg Burger Bones" into Nearburg and sell them exclusively (at high prices) at a speakeasy in their basement. Their partnership is jeopardized when Cat becomes too greedy and Dog starts to eat all the profits.Dog eats too many pecan pies and a pecan tree begins to grow in his head. Dog is humiliated by his condition, but Cat tries to exploit it by selling tickets to see the amazing Tree Headed Dog.

While thrashing around in Cat's treasured rose garden, Dog emerges with diamonds in his nose. Realizing they are sitting on a diamond mine, CatDog dig an elaborate series of tunnels underneath the house. While fighting over a huge mother of all diamonds, CatDog create a minequake and must work together to escape the collapsing tunnels. Finally, emerging from the rubble, CatDog realize that they have lost all of their hard-earned diamonds -- except for one. A gopher pops up and eats the last diamond right out of Cat's hand, revealing that, alas, it was only rock candy.While frolicking in the city dump, Dog finds an injured roach and takes it home as a pet. Cat becomes jealous and tries various unsuccessful methods to get rid of the roach. When the roach saves Cat from a mishap with the washing machine, Cat learns to love the roach. But the relationship is almost doomed from the start when the robot Cat used to try and get rid of the roach goes haywire and attacks them all.

Cat tries out for the musical theater production of Abe Lincoln: Superstar! But is dismayed when Dog inadvertently gets the lead role while he must play a donkey. Cat schemes to steal the part away but is paralyzed with stage fright on opening night. Dog coaches Cat and he gains confidence. In the end, the crowd roars its appreciation -- for Dog, who played the part of the donkey to perfection.Dog discovers that another canine has trespassed upon his favorite fire hydrant. Dog plants himself on the hydrant in an attempt to catch the perpetrator in the act and refuses to budge, even as their house catches fire.
